Die Alpen sind vom Klimawandel besonders betroffen. Die Gletscher schmelzen, die Schneefallgrenze steigt. Die EU-Kommission fordert daher, dass Europa bis 2050 klimaneutral wird. Also erneuerbare Energien statt Kohle, Öl und Gas. Eine konkrete Strategie dazu gibt es noch nicht. Doch die Wissenschaftler*innen sind sich einig, dass ein klimaneutrales Europa bis 2050 zu schaffen ist. Allerdings müssen wir heute damit anfangen.
Update 24.6.19: Auf dem EU-Gipfel am 21.6.2019 wollten sich die Staats- und Regierungschefs darauf einigen, die EU bis 2050 klimaneutral zu machen. Das wäre ein Signal gewesen. Doch die Festlegung auf einen Umbau zu einer klimaneutralen Wirtschaft scheiterte am Widerstand von Polen, Ungarn, Tschechien und Estland. Auf zum nächsten Anlauf, EU-Kommission!

NO COUNTRY CAN FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE ALONE. The Alps are strongly affected by climate change. Glaciers are retreating, the snow line is moving uphill. That’s why the European Commission calls for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In other words, replacing coal, oil and gas by renewable energies. However, there is no strategy yet. Scientists agree that a net-zero emission European society is feasible. But getting there starts today.
Update 6/24/19: European Union leaders failed to strike a deal to commit the bloc to achieving climate neutrality by 2050 at European Council summit on June, 21. Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Estonia blocked the agreement. Give it another try, European Commission!
